While studying the Scythian culture I was struck by the dramatic change that has occurred in the realm of horsemanship. As our society became more dependent on technology, we became less dependent on the knowledge that allowed us to work with horses naturally. To compensate for the fact that we know less about horse nature, we have developed more complicated tools to control them. The Scythians were well aware that it is impossible to change nature and they were unafraid of the realities of life, instead of hiding from the idea of death and survival, as our society does, they embraced it. The Scythians' understanding of the natural world and their observation of animal relationships around them inspired the creation of my piece Cycle in which the mythical griffin predator savagely attacks a horse. I chose to use the Scythian griffin to represent the ultimate predator whose instincts and actions are not understandable to humans. I believe that for the Scythian culture the griffin represented the unpredictability of death. The chosen composition is both sexual in nature as well as fetal like, representing how all facets of life, such as creation birth and death are interlinked.
