This piece was a turning point for me as an artist. It was my junior year in College when I was finally allowed to start exploring subject matter that was important to me without being limited by assignment requirements. At the time I was still struggling with flying lead changes with my horse Ace. It was then that I realized that the dynamics of a lead change were not real to me. I could not feel what was going on beneath me when I would ask a horse for this change. Ace would usually disunite or somehow he would manage to accomplish the lead change in spite of me, or change leads when I had not even asked for one. I knew the best way for me to gain an understanding of the lead change was to make art about it. I chose to emphasize the horse's hindquarters as the driving force behind this maneuver and show the moment of suspension as timeless.
