When I first studied the Paleolithic period in human history I was struck by the honest observance the artist employed to portray the horse. The paintings that are left behind are not accurate physical representations of the horse's body; however, these images are an amazing portrayal of the horse's nature outside of human influence. Were the visual depictions of horses an attempt to understand their nature? I applied this research into the creation of The Embodiment of Equus. In this piece I felt that it was most important to uncover what the horse really is outside of all the ideals and history that we put upon them. What is their nature; as creatures, as animals, with their own lives and ideas outside of what we ask of them? My first step was to separate the horse from ideals that we have put its body; instead of a long flowing tail I have left a tail bone, instead of a glossy coat I have left only gesture. By doing this, much in the way of the horse sculptor, Deborah Butterfield, the viewer can start to disassociate them self from what they assume makes a horse the animal that it is. It leaves open an opportunity for the horse to be reconsidered.
